The EmpowerED Mirror Project is about more than just education—it’s about true representation in Washington County. Our mission is to recruit and support People of Color, especially Black, Indigenous, and Pacific Islander educators, to reflect the vibrant diversity of our community. We offer a culturally responsive pathway to ensure that the educators in our schools truly understand and represent the students they serve. Representation matters, and we’re dedicated to making it happen.

Who is the EmpowerED Mirror Project designed to support?

The EmpowerED Mirror Project is dedicated to supporting future educators in the West Portland Metro Area, specifically Washington County, who champion equity and inclusion. Our primary focus is on People of Color, especially Black, Indigenous, and Pacific Islanders, who will truly represent the diverse communities we serve and drive meaningful change in our schools. Although residency in Washington County is not required, we prefer candidates with a strong connection to the community and a deep understanding of the diverse needs of marginalized communities in West Portland.

I am interested in being a school counselor...is this just for teachers?

Nope, it’s not just about teaching! We know education goes way beyond the classroom, and we’re here to back your journey toward getting licensed in whatever academic career path you’re on. Whether you’re aiming to be a counselor, social worker, instructional coach, curriculum coordinator, principal, or something else in the academic system—we got you!

Do I need any experience to join?

You don’t need any prior experience to join. We’ve got you covered every step of the way. It all starts with a discovery assessment, where we’ll create a personalized plan to help you find the right program and get you on the path to success. We’re here to guide you from day one.

I'm interested, but what will it cost me?

Finances can be one of the biggest challenges for aspiring Educators of Color. The total cost of your journey will depend on various factors such as the program you select and your eligibility for financial aid. However, we partner with the Teacher Connect and Oregon Teacher Scholars Programs to help reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Additionally, we'll assist in identifying other grants and scholarships to cover as many of your expenses as possible.
